Direct answer. Base in Futian or Luohu for the central business districts and the Hong Kong border, in Nanshan or Shekou for the bay, nightlife and ferries, in Bao'an for airport-easy nights, and in Dapeng New District for coastline, historic villages and guesthouses.
Which part of Shenzhen to base yourself in, matched to how you arrive, what you plan to do and how close you want the coast.
Every place name, district name and figure below is taken from the Shenzhen municipal government's own English pages, the Shenzhen Metro Group's official English site and Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport's official site. Retrieval dates and URLs are listed at the end.
Shenzhen is a linear city. It runs roughly east to west along the coast, with Hong Kong to the south and Dongguan to the north-west, and the practical question for a visitor is not "which hotel" but "which end of the line do I want to wake up in".
Three facts shape that choice, and all three come from the city's own travel guide:
So: west is where you land, the centre is where you shop and change trains, and the east is where the coast is. Your base should follow your reason for being there.
| You arrive… | The base that costs you the least | Why, in the city's own terms |
|---|---|---|
| By air at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport | Bao'an District, near the airport | The airport sits in the west of the city; the airport's own transport pages are built around getting from the terminal to the city and to Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao |
| By high-speed rail | Wherever your line terminates — the city has four high-speed railway stations, and they are not in one place | All four stations sit on a national high-speed network of 25,000 kilometres, with a direct 14-minute ride to Hong Kong from the city |
| From Hong Kong by land | Luohu or Futian | Both are named by the city's travel guide as core business districts, and both are on the border side of the city |
| From Hong Kong or Macao by sea | Shekou | The city runs a cruise homeport at Shekou, and the guide names Shekou Sea World as one of its main night-leisure districts |
| For the coast | Dapeng New District | The guide places the Dongchong and Xichong coastlines, the Dapeng Peninsula and the historic Dapeng Fortress area in Dapeng New District |
This is the part most "where to stay" articles fill in with opinion. Here is what the municipal travel guide itself says about each named area, and nothing more.
| Area named by the guide | What the guide says about it | The trip it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Luohu, Futian, Qianhai-Bao'an Center | Described together as the city's core business districts, and all three ranked among the world's top 30 emerging commercial zones for 2025 | Shopping-led trips; first visits; anyone who wants the city centre on foot |
| Huaqiangbei | Named as the city's electronics hub | Buyers, and travellers who came for components |
| Shuibei | Named as the city's jewellery hub | Jewellery buyers |
| Shekou Sea World, Window of the World, Coco Park | Named as bar streets and "top choices for nighttime leisure and entertainment among visitors" | Nightlife |
| Dapeng New District | The guide puts the Dongchong and Xichong coastlines here and notes both were recognised as one of the Eight Most Beautiful Coastlines in China; the district's own English pages describe Dapeng New District as the most well-preserved area in Shenzhen for historical and cultural resources, and the Dapeng subdistrict as a coastal town rated a demonstration area for international business, culture and tourism | Coast, hiking, historic villages, guesthouses |
| Xiaomeisha | Named as the site of Xiaomeisha Sea World | Families |
| Qianhai | Named as the site of Qianhai Snow World, described as the world's largest indoor ski resort, and of K11 ECOAST | Families, rainy days, new-build retail |
| OCT Harbor, OH Bay, Sea World, Window of the World | Named as stops on the city's official five City Walk routes, each of ten stops, drawn from 50 tourism sites selected in a municipal online vote | Self-guided walking days |
One caution that the sources themselves force: "Qianhai-Bao'an Center" is an area name the guide uses, not one of the city's administrative districts. The districts page lists ten districts — Bao'an, Futian, Luohu, Yantian, Nanshan, Longgang, Longhua, Pingshan, Guangming and Dapeng New District — plus the Shenshan Special Cooperation Zone. If a hotel advertises an address in "Qianhai", that is an area label; check the district on the property's own page before you book anything that depends on a district boundary.
The guide is explicit that the coast is a genuine resource rather than a marketing line: 260-plus kilometres of coastline, more than 50 islands, and a layout where, in its words, mountains connect seamlessly with the sea. It also names a set of specific coastal destinations.
| Coastal asset | Source's description |
|---|---|
| Dongchong and Xichong, Dapeng New District | Recognised as one of the Eight Most Beautiful Coastlines in China by Chinese National Geography magazine |
| Shenzhen Dapeng Peninsula International Geological Park, Xichong Coastal Tourism Resort | Named stops on the official "Mountain – River" City Walk route |
| Seaside Walkway along Daxiao Meisha | Named stop on the same route |
| Shenzhen's walking trail | A 300-kilometre corridor running east to west, linking 20 parks, waterfronts and reservoirs |
| Parks overall | The guide calls Shenzhen the "City of a Thousand Parks" and states the city now has over 1,300 parks |
The trade-off is distance. The east is where the coastline is and the west is where the airport is, and the metro lines that connect them are the ones you will spend your time on. If your trip is two nights and one of them is a beach night, expect to choose one end.
| Category | What the guide names |
|---|---|
| Business districts | Luohu, Futian and Qianhai-Bao'an Center, all ranked among the world's top 30 emerging commercial zones for 2025 |
| Electronics | Huaqiangbei |
| Jewellery | Shuibei |
| Retail landmark | K11 ECOAST, described as where art meets coastal charm |
| Nightlife | Bar streets at Shekou Sea World, Window of the World and Coco Park; light shows and traditional night markets are named as part of the city's night economy |
| Food | Thousands of eateries; restaurants listed in the Black Pearl Restaurant Guide and the Michelin Guide are named as draws, with Cantonese and Chaoshan cooking among the specific cuisines mentioned |
For a stay decision, the useful reading of that table is: if you want food, shopping and nightlife within walking distance, the guide's business-district names are the ones to search; if you want coast, search the Dapeng names instead. The guide does not rank hotels, and neither does this page.
| Mode | What the sources state |
|---|---|
| Metro | 18 lines (municipal travel guide, 2026). The Shenzhen Metro Group publishes its own timetable, ticket types, ticket regulations and fare-and-discount policy pages in English |
| Metro to the airport | The airport's official metro page covers the metro at the airport; the operator's network list includes Airport station on Line 11 |
| High-speed rail | Four high-speed railway stations in the city, on a 25,000-kilometre national network, with a direct 14-minute ride to Hong Kong |
| Airport | International passenger routes to over 60 cities, with more than 900 planned flights per week; the third runway is operational |
| Ports and sea routes | Named by the city as a transport category in its own right, alongside the Shekou Cruise Homeport |
Metro hours, ticket rules and fares are revised without much notice. The operator publishes current versions on its own site, and the ticketing and luggage rules you are most likely to need on arrival are set out in our Shenzhen airport-to-city guide.
| Period | The guide's description |
|---|---|
| November to April | Named as the best period: short spring and autumn, mild sunny winters, average temperature around 15 to 20 degrees Celsius |
| Late January to February | The lowest winter temperatures of the year typically fall here; the guide recommends a sweater and a thick coat |
| May to October | Long summer; the guide notes air conditioning runs in buses, metros and shopping malls from March to December; the highest temperatures normally fall in July |
For a coast-first trip that matters: the same guide describes Shenzhen as having longer summers and no winters, so the beach months and the comfortable months do not fully overlap.
If you are arriving by air, start with Shenzhen airport to the city, which covers the metro, buses, coaches, ferries and intercity links from the terminal. If you are stringing cities together, our guide to booking high-speed rail tickets covers the ticketing rules, and the seat classes page explains what the seat names on your ticket mean. Before you land, how to pay in China covers the payment apps that most metro gates, taxis and shops expect. All four of the site's other stay guides — Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Guilin — follow the same source-first method.
The municipal travel guide names Luohu, Futian and Qianhai-Bao'an Center as the city's core business districts, and both Luohu and Futian sit on the Hong Kong side of the city. For a first trip built around shopping, food and transport links, those names are the ones the city itself uses, and the guide places Shekou Sea World, Window of the World and Coco Park among the main night-leisure districts.
That depends on your arrival and departure times, not on the city. Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport is in the west and handles international passenger routes to over 60 cities with more than 900 planned flights a week; the metro reaches the airport, with Airport station named on Line 11 in the operator's network list. If you have an early departure or a long layover, a western base removes a cross-city transfer. If your days are in the centre, the airport is a single metro or taxi run.
The city's own guide describes a direct high-speed rail trip to Hong Kong of 14 minutes, and lists four high-speed railway stations in Shenzhen and a cruise homeport at Shekou. Entry rules are a matter for the immigration authorities of both sides, not for a hotel page, so check the current requirements for your nationality before booking either leg.
The east. The travel guide places the Dongchong and Xichong coastlines in Dapeng New District, where both were recognised as one of the Eight Most Beautiful Coastlines in China by Chinese National Geography magazine, and it lists the Shenzhen Dapeng Peninsula International Geological Park, the Xichong Coastal Tourism Resort and the Seaside Walkway along Daxiao Meisha as stops on its official coastal walking route. The guide states that Shenzhen has approximately 1,145 square kilometres of sea area, over 260 kilometres of coastline and more than 50 islands.
The municipal districts page lists ten districts — Bao'an, Futian, Luohu, Yantian, Nanshan, Longgang, Longhua, Pingshan, Guangming and Dapeng New District — plus the Shenshan Special Cooperation Zone. It matters mainly for two things: how far you are from the airport in the west and the coastline in the east, and whether the address you are booking is inside a district designation or an area label such as Qianhai.
