Where to Stay in Guangzhou: Best Areas for First-Time Visitors (2026)

Last updated: 20 September 2026

Direct answer. Guangzhou has four practical bases. Liwan and Yuexiu hold the historic core: Shamian Island, Yongqing Fang and Beijing Road. Tianhe is the modern axis, Zhujiang New Town and Grandview Mall. Haizhu covers Canton Tower and the Canton Fair at Pazhou. Stay on the metro line that fits your trip.

Every district, landmark and transport detail below is dated and linked to the official source in the list at the end of this page. Metro fares, terminal assignments and service hours change with each season — re-check before you book.

1. How to choose an area in Guangzhou

Guangzhou is a river city with a historic west bank and a modern east side, and the two are far enough apart that your choice of district shapes every day of the trip. The city's official English portal is organised the same way a visitor experiences it: the old commercial quarters of Liwan, the civic centre of Yuexiu, the new central axis in Tianhe, and the exhibition and tower district across the water in Haizhu.

Three questions settle most of it:

Guangzhou is the third city in this area-by-area series. The same breakdown for the other two gateway cities is in where to stay in Shanghai and where to stay in Beijing, and the Where to Stay hub collects them.

One structural point that surprises visitors: Guangzhou is the host city of the China Import and Export Fair, better known as the Canton Fair, and the fair complex has its own metro stations rather than a single venue stop. During fair sessions, the stations around it run extra trains and add English-language service desks, multilingual volunteers and interpretation devices. That is a real convenience — and also a reason to book early.

2. Liwan: Shamian Island and the old Xiguan streets

Liwan is the historic west of the city, and it is where the European trading history and the Cantonese street life sit side by side.

Shamian Island is the centrepiece. It is an artificial island of about 30 hectares in the heart of Guangzhou's central urban area, and the municipal government describes it as a renowned diplomatic and historical heritage site. It occupies only 0.5 per cent of Liwan district's land area but holds more than 52 per cent of the district's ancient trees — 137 surviving trees, the oldest over 300 years old and the youngest more than 100. The official description groups its ancient architecture, sculptures and ancient trees as the "Three Treasures of Shamian."

Shamian also carries the food story. The island retains many buildings in the late 19th-century European style, and it houses the White Swan Hotel — described by the municipal portal as China's first five-star hotel with Sino-foreign cooperation. The area is promoted as a place to eat Western food while looking out over the Pearl River nightscape.

What you get: a compact, walkable island with river views, colonial-era architecture and the most concentrated tree cover in the central city.

What you trade: Shamian is quiet rather than busy, and it is a heritage site rather than a nightlife district. If you want street food at midnight, you will be travelling for it.

The rest of Liwan keeps the older Cantonese character. Yongqing Fang, at No. 99 Enning Road, is the restored Xiguan lane district — stone-paved lanes, old-style arcades, comic exhibitions in the Xiguan mansions, coffee shops and bazaars. Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street and Yongqing Fang are the two anchors for classic Lingnan food and old brands, and Pantang Wuyue is a historic community where you can eat your way through Xiguan snacks. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, also known as the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, is at No. 34 Enlong Li off Zhongshan 7th Road.

The municipal portal also lists six food hubs in Liwan, which is a useful map of the district's evening options: the Shangxiajiu-to-Yongqing-Fang corridor for classic Lingnan food, Shamian Island for European-style dining, Yuehui City (described as the second-largest shopping mall in Guangzhou, with more than 70 dining brands) for family meals, Dongsha International Trade Port for international cuisine, the Bai'etan Business Zone for riverside and Michelin-listed restaurants, and the Huangsha-to-Liu'ersan Road stretch for seafood bought and cooked on the spot.

3. Yuexiu: Beijing Road and the civic heart

Yuexiu is the administrative and civic centre, and it holds the single most useful address for a first-time visitor.

Beijing Road Pedestrian Street runs through Yuexiu district and is one of the city's best-known walking streets: ancient pathways lie beneath your feet where the road has been excavated and glassed over, and street snacks line both sides. The municipal tourism listing also notes the Dafo Temple on Beijing Road. For a first trip, this is the area where you can step out of a hotel and be inside the sightseeing without planning anything.

Yuexiu also stacks the city's commemorative and green sites close together. The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is at No. 299 Dongfeng Middle Road, and Guangzhou Zoo — home to more than 450 species, including giant pandas — is at No. 120 Xianlie Middle Road. The sightseeing bus network runs a dedicated route through the older part of the city that reaches Beijing Lu Pedestrian Street, the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees, Guangxiao Temple, the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, the Cantonese Opera Arts Museum, Yongqingfang and Shamian Island, so Yuexiu and Liwan are easy to combine in one day.

What you get: maximum sightseeing per walking minute, the highest concentration of the city's older monuments, and straightforward metro and bus coverage.

What you trade: it is the busiest and least quiet of the central districts, and hotel stock skews older than in Tianhe. If you want a pool and a mall downstairs, look elsewhere.

4. Tianhe: Zhujiang New Town and the modern axis

Tianhe is where modern Guangzhou is on display, and it is the district most people mean when they say "the new city."

Zhujiang New Town is the new central axis: the municipal portal's night sightseeing-bus route begins at Canton Tower, crosses Guangzhou Bridge and Haixinsha Island, runs through Zhujiang New Town and Ersha Island, passes Dashatou Wharf and returns to Canton Tower. The same axis is where you find the Guangzhou Opera House, Guangdong Museum and Guangzhou Library — the landmarks the official free transit tour visits, alongside Huacheng Square, Chen Clan Academy and Yuexiu Park.

For shopping and indoor entertainment, Grandview Mall is at No. 228 Tianhe Road, and is described officially as blending shopping with an indoor rainforest and aquarium. Tianhe also holds the South China National Botanical Garden at No. 1190 Tianyuan Road, and the Haixinsha East Wharf on Linjiang Avenue, where the Pearl River cruise boats dock.

Just south of the district boundary, on the river in Liwan, the Bai'etan Greater Bay Area Art Center is the newest cultural landmark: 78.5 metres high with 11 above-ground floors and 2 underground, it houses the Guangdong Museum of Art, the Guangdong Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition Center and the Guangdong Literature Museum, and its almost 360-metre-long structure faces Zhujiang New Town, Canton Tower, Guangdong Museum and Guangzhou Opera House across the water.

What you get: the newest hotels, the best metro interchange density, and an evening that is genuinely walkable if you stay inside Zhujiang New Town.

What you trade: less old-city atmosphere, higher room rates, and longer rides to Shamian, Yongqing Fang and Beijing Road. Tianhe is also where a business trip usually lands, so availability tightens during fair and conference weeks. Ties back to the airport and the fair are good: the intercity rail line links Guangzhou with Foshan, Dongguan and Zhaoqing through the airport stations, and Metro Line 8 reaches Pazhou and Xingangdong for the fair complex.

5. Haizhu: Canton Tower and the Canton Fair at Pazhou

Haizhu sits on the south bank of the Pearl River, and it holds both the city's signature tower and its trade infrastructure.

Canton Tower is at No. 222 Yuejiang West Road in Haizhu district, and offers panoramic skyline views from what the official listing describes as the world's highest horizontal Ferris wheel, plus the Sky Drop ride. The same stretch of riverfront includes the Zhujiang Party Pier Beer Culture & Art Zone at No. 118 Modiesha Street, with live music and riverside bars.

Pazhou Island is the trade side: the Canton Fair Complex has its own metro stations rather than a single stop. Metro Line 8 serves Pazhou and Xingangdong stations and Line 11 also stops at Pazhou. The official wayfinding is specific: from Xingangdong Station take Exit A for Section A of the complex, from Pazhou Station take Exit A or Exit B for Section B, or walk roughly 300 metres west from Exit C of Pazhou Station for Section C. Line 12's eastern section, running from Higher Education Mega Center South to Ersha Island, now interchanges directly with Line 8, which widens the routes in and out.

The practical detail that matters most during a fair session: the metro accepts UnionPay, Mastercard, American Express, Visa and JCB cards, and POS terminals for international cards are at 11 stations including Pazhou and Xingangdong. Currency exchange is available at Xingangdong Station, Guangzhou East Railway Station and Airport North Station. Three fair passes are sold — a 1-day pass giving unlimited travel for 24 hours after first validation, a 3-day pass for 72 hours and a 5-day pass for 120 hours — and the metro also runs a service desk with consulting, translation, ticketing and emergency aid at key stations, smart lockers at Pazhou Station, bilingual service robots at Pazhou and Xingangdong, and 78 simultaneous interpretation devices across key stations.

For the wallet side of that — setting up Alipay or WeChat Pay on an overseas card before you travel — see how to pay in China.

What you get: the shortest possible commute to the fair, tower views from your window, and a fast link to Tianhe across the river.

What you trade: Pazhou itself is a business district, so evenings are quieter than Yuexiu or Liwan, and room rates spike hard during fair sessions. Book months ahead or accept a longer ride.

6. Baiyun and the airport zone

Baiyun district occupies the north of the city and contains Baiyun Mountain and the airport. It is the right base only if your trip is genuinely airport-shaped — a long transit stop, an early departure, or a one-night layover.

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport now runs three terminals. Terminal 3 opened on 30 October 2025, and reaching it by metro takes an extra step: take Metro Line 3 or Line 9 and get off at Gaozeng Station, then transfer to the free Terminal 3 shuttle bus, a one-way distance of about 6 kilometres and a travel time of roughly 15 minutes, with buses every 15 to 20 minutes. The alternative is to ride to Baiyun Airport North Station (Terminal 2) and take the intercity train one stop to Baiyun Airport East Station (Terminal 3). The intercity stations sit inside each terminal — Baiyun Airport South for T1, Baiyun Airport North for T2 and Baiyun Airport East for T3 — and trains run approximately every 17 minutes.

Moving between terminals is free and runs around the clock: a shuttle loop serves T1, T2 and T3 with departures every 10 minutes during the 22:00 to 03:00 peak window, every 20 minutes from 08:00 to 22:00 and every 30 minutes from 03:00 to 08:00. Two new parking complexes, P11 and P12, add 1,800 spaces. Domestic check-in at Terminal 3 closes 40 minutes before departure, which is the number worth remembering if you are switching terminals.

If you have a long layover rather than a hotel night, Guangzhou runs a free half-day transit tour for international transit passengers whose stopover exceeds eight hours. Announced by the municipal portal in July 2024, it departs Terminal 2 at 8:30 am, visits Huacheng Square, Guangdong Museum, Guangzhou Library, Guangzhou Opera House, Chen Clan Academy and Yuexiu Park, includes a Cantonese dim sum lunch and returns to the airport at 2 pm. Registration is at the transit tour information desk in the T2 international arrivals hall, and the programme's availability should be confirmed there before you rely on it.

Baiyun is also where the green side of the city is: Baiyun Mountain Scenic Area is at No. 801 Guangyuan Middle Road, with skyline views and forest trails.

The same airport-to-city decision in Shanghai is documented separately, in Shanghai airport to the city. The pattern repeats across Chinese hubs: a metro line, a shuttle and a rail link, each with its own terminal logic and its own last-train constraint.

What you get: the shortest possible airport transfer, quiet nights and easy access to the mountain.

What you trade: everything else. Central sightseeing becomes a long metro or taxi ride each way, so treat Baiyun as a transit base rather than a holiday base.

7. The outer districts, in one paragraph each

Four districts sit outside the central ring, and each has a clear reason to visit. Panyu, to the south, holds the Guangzhou Chimelong Tourist Resort at No. 299 Hanxi Avenue East, with roller coasters, water parks and circus shows, plus the Lotus Hill Tourism Area and Baomo Garden. Nansha, at the southern tip, has the Nansha Tianhou Palace at No. 88 Tianhou Road, honouring the sea goddess Mazu. Zengcheng holds the Guangzhou Sunac Resort and its indoor ski area at No. 78 Fenghuang North Road in Huadu, and the SKOV River Wonderland at No. 101 Baishuizhai Avenue. Conghua is the hot-spring district, with the Bishuiwan Hot Spring Resort at No. 353 Yuquan Avenue.

None of these is a sensible base for a first city trip — the commute into the centre is long — but all four work as day trips, and the resort clusters are the exception where staying on site makes sense.

9. Getting around from wherever you stay

Three things make Guangzhou easier than its size suggests.

The metro takes foreign cards. UnionPay, Mastercard, American Express, Visa and JCB are accepted across the network, and international-card POS terminals are available at 11 stations, including Pazhou and Xingangdong. Currency exchange is offered at Xingangdong Station, Guangzhou East Railway Station and Airport North Station. If you pay by phone instead, Alipay+ has connected Hong Kong wallets such as AlipayHK to public transport in key Greater Bay Area cities including Guangzhou and Shenzhen — worth checking against your own wallet before you travel.

The airport is a three-terminal system. Metro Line 3 and Line 9 reach the airport area, with a free shuttle from Gaozeng Station to Terminal 3 and an intercity rail line linking all three terminals roughly every 17 minutes. From Airport South Station the official metro route to the fair complex at Xingangdong or Pazhou is about 43 minutes for 8 yuan, changing at Tiyu Xi and Kecun.

Rail stations are all on the metro. From Guangzhou Railway Station, take Line 2 towards Guangzhou South and change at Changgang to Line 8. From Guangzhou East Railway Station, take Line 3 towards Panyu Square and change at Kecun to Line 8. From Guangzhou South Railway Station, take Line 2 towards Jiahe Wanggang and change at Changgang to Line 8. Exit at Xingangdong for Areas A and D of the fair complex, or Pazhou for Areas B and C.

Buying the intercity and high-speed legs is a separate exercise from riding the city metro — the booking mechanics, passport requirements and collection rules are covered in how to book China high-speed rail tickets. And if you have not sorted out connectivity before you fly, do it early: the best eSIM options for China explains what actually works on the mainland.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Guangzhou for first-time visitors?

Liwan and Yuexiu hold the historic core that most first-timers come for. Shamian Island covers about 30 hectares in Liwan and is described by the municipal government as a renowned diplomatic and historical heritage site, while Beijing Road Pedestrian Street sits in Yuexiu. Both are walking districts, which is why they suit a short first trip better than the newer districts across the river.

Where should I stay for the Canton Fair?

Stay on or near Pazhou Island in Haizhu district, where the Canton Fair Complex is. Metro Line 8 reaches Pazhou and Xingangdong stations, and Line 11 also stops at Pazhou. From Xingangdong Station take Exit A for Section A of the complex; from Pazhou Station take Exit A or Exit B for Section B, or walk roughly 300 metres west from Exit C for Section C.

Which area of Guangzhou is closest to the airport?

Baiyun district, in the north, contains the airport. Metro Line 3 and Line 9 both reach the airport area, and a free shuttle connects Gaozeng Station with Terminal 3 — about 6 kilometres and roughly 15 minutes, running every 15 to 20 minutes. An intercity rail line also links all three terminals, with trains roughly every 17 minutes.

Can I pay for the Guangzhou metro with a foreign bank card?

Yes — UnionPay, Mastercard, American Express, Visa and JCB cards are accepted across the Guangzhou Metro network, and POS terminals supporting international cards are available at 11 stations, including Pazhou and Xingangdong. Currency exchange is provided at Xingangdong Station, Guangzhou East Railway Station and Airport North Station. Carry a little cash as a fallback for small vendors outside the metro.

How long does the metro take from the airport to the Canton Fair complex?

The official route is about 43 minutes for 8 yuan: Line 3 (north extension) from Airport South Station to Tiyu Xi, transfer to Line 3 for Kecun, then Line 8 to Xingangdong Station for Areas A and D or Pazhou Station for Areas B and C. Allow extra time for the transfer walks and for peak-hour crowding.
