Direct answer. Shanghai splits into a few practical bases. Stay in Huangpu, around the Bund and People's Square, for first-time sightseeing, in Jing'an for metro convenience and dining, or in the former French Concession for streets you can walk. Lujiazui suits skyline views and business travel; Hongqiao suits the exhibition centre.

Shanghai is a metro city. The choice that changes your day is not which district sounds fashionable, but which line you can walk to, and how far the nearest interchange is from your hotel door.
Three questions settle most of it:
One structural point that surprises visitors: the city has two "centres" facing each other across the Huangpu River. Puxi (west bank) holds the historic core — the Bund, People's Square, Jing'an and the old concession streets. Pudong (east bank) holds Lujiazui's towers and the exhibition and airport infrastructure. Both are well served by metro, and a river crossing is a normal commute, not a day trip.
This is the classic first-timer base, and the official city pages describe why it holds together as one area.
What you get: the riverfront, the museum quarter, two major retail streets and the old city temple in one walkable cluster, with a metro interchange (People's Square) in the middle of it. What you trade: it is the busiest and most photographed part of the city, and hotel stock in the very core is limited.
Jing'an sits immediately west of Huangpu and reads, on the official pages, as a district of temples, shopping and green space rather than of monuments.
What you get: a central, well-connected district with heavy retail and restaurant density. What you trade: it is an office-and-shopping district, so weekday mornings are commuter-busy; it is not a riverfront location.
The tree-lined streets people mean when they say "the French Concession" are formally the Hengshan Road–Fuxing Road Historical and Cultural Block, and the official description is precise about its size and its geography.
What you get: the most walkable, residential-feeling part of central Shanghai, with heritage architecture, smaller hotels and cafés. What you trade: it is a large area with no single metro hub, so check which of the four districts your address actually falls in and which line is nearest — a "French Concession" listing 2 km from the nearest station is a different trip.
If your trip is anchored on the skyline or on meetings in Pudong, Lujiazui is the practical base — the towers are the destination, not a day trip from it.
What you get: river views, new-build hotels, and short transfers to Pudong Airport and to the exhibition halls. What you trade: the street-level experience is corporate rather than historic; for the Bund's streetscapes you cross the river.
Hongqiao is the base for trade-fair visitors and for anyone whose trip starts or ends with a domestic flight — Hongqiao Airport shares its site with the city's high-speed rail terminal.
What you get: the shortest possible transfer to the airport and the exhibition halls, and the option to leave by high-speed rail without crossing the city. What you trade: it is a transport and exhibition district rather than a sightseeing one — the Bund is on the other side of town.
If Disney is the point of the trip, the southern edge of Pudong New Area is the practical base.
What you get: a short trip to the park gates and park-oriented accommodation. What you trade: the resort is a long way from the historic centre. Treat the metro ride into the city as a planned half-day, and check the operator's timetable for late services on the night you plan to stay until closing.

Huangpu district, around the Bund, People's Square and Nanjing Road, puts the classic sights inside walking distance, and Metro Lines 1, 10 and 13 reach its main attractions. Metro Line 2 runs from Pudong Airport Terminal 1&2 station to People's Square in about one hour.
Jing'an works well: HKRI Taikoo Hui at No 789 West Nanjing Road is served by West Nanjing Road Station on Metro Line 13, and Shanghai Circus World at No 2266 Gonghexin Road by Shanghai Circus World Station on Metro Line 1. The Shanghai Museum is reached from People's Square Station on Lines 1, 2 or 8, Exit 1.
Pudong side (Lujiazui) is the skyline and business choice: Shanghai Tower, the Oriental Pearl Tower and Jinmao Tower are all there, and Shanghai Museum East is served by Metro Lines 2, 4 or 6. Puxi gives you the Bund, the former French Concession and Nanjing Road on foot. Both are on the metro network.
Stay in the Hongqiao area. Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 is served by Metro Lines 10 and 2, and Line 2 gives direct access to the National Exhibition and Convention Center. At NECC Station use exits 4, 5, 6 or 8 for the West Entrance, or Exit 15 on Line 17 for the North Square.
Pudong New Area south, around Chuansha New Town: Shanghai Disney Resort is at No 310 Huangzhao Road and is served by Metro Line 11 at Disney Resort Station. It opened in 2016 and is home to the tallest and largest Disney castle ever built.
