Direct answer. Guilin City is the transport base, and where the central lakes and city sights sit; Yangshuo, 65 km south, is the scenery base; Longsheng, 87 km northwest, is the terraces base. Most trips sleep in the city first, then in Yangshuo.
Every place name, distance and transport node below comes from the destination's official travel guide or the Li River scenic area's own transport page, both listed at the end. Which base suits you is our editorial judgement, not a sourced fact.
The one thing worth settling before you compare hotels is that "Guilin" is not a single place. The destination's official travel guide describes the Guilin Area as Guilin City together with eleven other counties — Yangshuo, Longsheng, Lingchuan, Xing'an and Ziyuan among them — a region home to more than twenty nationalities, including Zhuang, Hui, Miao, Yao and Dong.
That matters because the landscape people picture is mostly not in the city. A hotel listed in Yangshuo is not a hotel in Guilin city; the two are 65 km apart. Choose the base first, then the building.
| Base | Where it is | What it is the base for | Sleep here if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guilin City | The city itself, where the airport road and three of the four railway stations lead | The city's own sights, the lakes, and onward transport | You arrive late, leave early, or want the river as the next morning's appointment |
| Yangshuo | 65 km south of Guilin City | Karst scenery, the Li River Scenic Area, rafting, cycling, the largest number of sightseeing spots in the Guilin Area | You came for the landscape rather than the city |
| Longsheng | 87 km northwest of Guilin City | The Longji Rice Terraces and the minority villages inside them | You want the terraces as a stay, not a day trip |
| Lingchuan | Wraps the city from the east, the south and the west | Two old towns, Daxu and Jiuwu, and quiet countryside | You want old streets and low-rise rather than a hotel strip |
| The airport side | Wanfu Plaza area, Lingui district | Getting to the airport without a pre-dawn gamble | Your trip begins or ends with a very early flight |
Guilin City holds the transport and the city's own sights, which makes the first night easy to justify. The official attraction list for the city reads almost like a walking plan: Elephant Trunk Hill, Central Square, Zhengyang Walking Street, the Riyue Shuangta Cultural Park with its Sun and Moon Pagodas, Jingjiang Palace, Seven Star Park, Fubo Hill, Diecai Hill, Solitary Beauty Peak, South Lake Park and Reed Flute Cave. The evening set piece is the Two Rivers and Four Lakes cruise, which the official guide lists as an attraction in its own right.
There is no metro in Guilin. The destination guide's Getting Around section covers car, bus, taxi and bicycle and lists no urban rail, so plan on buses and ride-hailing instead. Two bus facts earn their place on a first day: the urban district runs eight free bus routes — the routes numbered with a leading 5 — and Sightseeing Line 1 loops the downtown's main sights, Elephant Trunk Hill, Fubo Hill and Folded Brocade Hill, with a guide on board.
The city base suits three travellers in particular: the one who lands at night, the one who flies out early, and the one who wants to wake up near the road to the cruise piers.
Yangshuo is 65 km south of Guilin City, and the official guide does not hedge about why people go: it has the largest number of sightseeing spots in the whole Guilin Area. Within the county sit the Li River Scenic Area and the Impression Third Sister Liu show, plus the activities the region is known for — rock climbing, bamboo rafting, hiking and cycling through the countryside.
It is also where the river puts you. All morning cruises leave from Zhujiang Pier or Mopanshan Pier, about 40 minutes' drive from Guilin city, and the 3.5-hour run down the classic 83 km stretch finishes in Yangshuo town. Take the cruise and you are in Yangshuo by early afternoon, which is the strongest practical argument for sleeping there rather than travelling back to the city.
The county has its own transport of its own: two bus stations, Yangshuo North and Yangshuo South, and one railway station. Inside town, the named anchors are West Street, the Yulong River, Moon Hill and the Big Banyan Tree; the Yulong valley just outside town is the quieter alternative to West Street for cycling and rafting. If your ticket shows Yangshuo rather than Guilin, you can leave by high-speed rail without returning to the city at all — see our guide to booking China high-speed rail tickets.
Longsheng sits 87 km northwest of Guilin City, and it is a different kind of trip. More than twenty ethnic minorities live in the county, and the Longji Rice Terraces are the reason to go. The official guidance is unusually specific about where to sleep: stay overnight in the Longji Zhuang Village to experience Zhuang minority life, and treat Ping'an and Jinkeng as the two main terrace village clusters. The Huangluo Yao Minority Village, where the Long Hair Show runs regularly, is the Yao equivalent.
Because most of the minority villages are inside the terraces, the official advice is to explore them on foot — hiking rather than a coach is how you move between them. Longsheng does have shuttle buses to Guilin City, but the distance and the walking make this a base with at least one night attached, not a half-day add-on. If the terraces are the point of your trip rather than a bonus, the city guide's Guilin overview puts them in the wider itinerary.
Lingchuan wraps around Guilin City from the east, the south and the west. The official guide notes plainly that it has fewer tourism resources than Yangshuo or Longsheng, then names what a slower traveller comes for: Daxu Old Town and Jiuwu Old Town.
Daxu was originally built in 200 AD, lies 18 km southeast of the city, and is counted among the four old towns of Guangxi, with preserved old houses and stone roads. Jiuwu is roughly 35 km northwest and known for ecotourism and cultural visits; inside it sits Jiangtou Village, more than 800 years old, with buildings originally raised in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Neither is a hotel district so much as a half-day out, but if your instinct on arrival is to avoid the busiest streets, look at this side of the city.
One base deserves its own line because your flight, not the scenery, decides it. The official airport shuttle schedule runs between Guilin Liangjiang Airport and four pickup points: Minhang Hotel downtown, Guilin Railway North Station, Wanfu Plaza — where the bus stops at Four Points by Sheraton Guilin Lingui — and Yangshuo Bus Station. If your itinerary opens or closes with a very early departure, staying on the Wanfu Plaza and Lingui side takes the guesswork out of the morning. If your trip is built around the river instead, read the reverse logic in the Shanghai and Beijing accommodation guides, where the trade-off between airport and city centre plays out differently.
| Your trip looks like this | Sleep in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Land in the evening, cruise the Li River tomorrow | Guilin City | The city is the road head for the piers, and the cruise is a fixed morning departure |
| Two or three days, and the landscape is the point | Yangshuo | The karst, the river and the largest concentration of sightseeing spots are there |
| You want the terraces and the minority villages | Longsheng | The villages are inside the terraces; hiking between them needs a night there |
| Old streets, low-rise, few crowds | Lingchuan, or the old towns as half-days | The official guide itself describes Lingchuan as the quieter county |
| A dawn flight out of Guilin Liangjiang | The Wanfu Plaza and Lingui area | It is a scheduled stop on the official airport shuttle route |
| Three days and one packing mistake to avoid | City one night, then Yangshuo | You get the transport base and the landscape base without a wasted transfer |
By rail. Four stations serve this trip — Guilin, Guilin North, Guilin West and Yangshuo — with direct high-speed services to major cities nationwide. Before you book a hotel, check which station is printed on your ticket: the names tell you which side of the trip they serve, and booking a city hotel against a Yangshuo departure costs you an unnecessary transfer.
By river. All morning cruises start from Zhujiang Pier or Mopanshan Pier, approximately 40 minutes' drive from Guilin city, and reach Yangshuo in about 3.5 hours. To get to the piers, a customised pier shuttle runs from Guilin Bus North Station through Beiji Guangchang, Zhongxin Guangchang, Guilin Bus Terminal and Sanli Dian Guangchang to Zhujiang Pier and then Mopanshan Pier; Route 9 also runs from Tian'etang to Zhujiang Pier.
By coach. Guilin South Bus Station, Guilin North Bus Station and Qintan Bus Station all run services to Yangshuo town, Yangdi and Xingping, so Yangshuo is reachable even without the river or the railway.
For Longsheng. Shuttle buses connect Longsheng with Guilin City, but once you are there the terraces and the villages are a walking proposition rather than a driving one.
Start in Guilin City for the night before your river day, because that is where the airport, the railway stations and the road to the cruise piers are. Then sleep in Yangshuo, which is where the landscape and the largest concentration of sightseeing spots in the Guilin Area are. A three-day trip usually means one night in the city and one or two in Yangshuo.
They do different jobs rather than competing. Guilin City is the transport base and the city-sights base, with the lakes, the pagodas and the evening cruise. Yangshuo is 65 km south and is the landscape base, holding the Li River Scenic Area, rafting, cycling and the biggest number of sightseeing spots in the area. If you have three days, sleep in both.
Not comfortably. Longsheng is 87 km northwest of Guilin City, and most of the minority villages sit inside the Longji Rice Terraces, where the official advice is to explore on foot. Treat it as its own base with at least one overnight rather than a half-day add-on, and plan the rest of the trip around that night.
The destination's official guide recommends staying overnight in the Longji Zhuang Village to experience Zhuang minority life, and describes hiking as the ideal way to explore the villages because most of them are inside the terraces. An overnight is what makes that practical, and it also puts you there for the light rather than the middle of the day.
Decide by your flight rather than by the sightseeing list. The official airport shuttle serves Minhang Hotel downtown, Guilin Railway North Station, Wanfu Plaza, where the bus stops at Four Points by Sheraton Guilin Lingui, and Yangshuo Bus Station. If your trip starts or ends with a very early departure, staying on the Wanfu Plaza side removes the gamble.
