Direct answer. Guangzhou is a two- to three-day city for most first-time visitors: one day for the Lingnan old city in Liwan and Yuexiu, one for Canton Tower and the Zhujiang New Town skyline, and a half-day for Shamian Island. Base yourself in Tianhe for convenience or Liwan for atmosphere.
Guangzhou is the southern gateway most travellers pass through rather than stop in, which is a mistake. The city runs on a different clock from Beijing or Shanghai: the food is Cantonese rather than generic Chinese, the old quarters are arcaded and walkable, and the riverfront skyline is a twenty-minute metro ride from a two-thousand-year-old street market.
The official city tourism material groups Guangzhou's sights into four themes — urban energy, Lingnan culture, green escapes and family days out — and that turns out to be a good way to plan, because the themes sit in different parts of the city and mixing too many of them in one day means spending your trip underground.
Urban energy. The Canton Tower anchors the modern city: the address is No. 222 Yuejiang West Road in Haizhu District, and it claims the world's highest horizontal Ferris wheel plus the Sky Drop ride. Across the river, Grandview Mall at No. 228 Tianhe Road in Tianhe District mixes shopping with an indoor rainforest, an aquarium and other attractions. In the evening, a Pearl River night cruise shows the skyline from the water; the piers named by the city government are Canton Tower Fortune Pier, on the riverbank northeast of the tower, and Haixinsha East Wharf on Linjiang Avenue in Tianhe District. For something later, the Zhujiang Party Pier beer culture and art zone at No. 118 Modiesha Street, Yuejiang West Road, keeps the riverbank going with live music and bars.
Lingnan culture. This is the part of Guangzhou that people who "just pass through" never see. Yongqing Fang is at No. 99 Enning Road in Liwan District: stone-paved lanes, old arcades, Xiguan mansions, coffee shops and bazaars, with people in traditional costume posing for photographs. Beijing Road Pedestrian Street in Yuexiu District has ancient road surfaces preserved beneath the modern street and street snacks along it, with Dafo Temple on the same road. The Guangdong Folk Art Museum — better known as the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, at No. 34 Enlong Li, Zhongshan 7th Road, Liwan District — is the carved, painted set piece of the style. The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall at No. 299 Dongfeng Middle Road in Yuexiu District is the other obligatory stop, and Nansha Tianhou Palace at No. 88 Tianhou Road in Nansha District, dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu, describes itself as the largest complex of its kind in Southeast Asia.
Green escapes. Baiyun Mountain Scenic Area (No. 801 Guangyuan Middle Road, Baiyun District) is the city's default hike, with forest trails and skyline views. The South China National Botanical Garden at No. 1190 Tianyuan Road, Tianhe District, is the slower option, with exotic plants and greenhouses. Further out, Lotus Hill Tourism Area in Shilou Town, Panyu District, is known for red cliffs and an ancient pagoda, Baomo Garden in Zini Village, Shawan Town, Panyu District, for Lingnan garden art with pavilions and koi ponds, and Bishuiwan Hot Spring Resort at No. 353 Yuquan Avenue in Conghua District for the mineral pools at the end of a day.
Family days. Guangzhou Zoo at No. 120 Xianlie Middle Road, Yuexiu District, holds more than 450 species including giant pandas. Guangzhou Chimelong Tourist Resort at No. 299 Hanxi Avenue East, Panyu District, is the theme-park and circus option, and Guangzhou Sunac Resort at No. 78 Fenghuang North Road, Huadu District, has Guangzhou Bonski, an indoor ski area.
| Time you have | What it realistically covers | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Half a day | One theme, one district. Shamian Island plus a dim sum lunch, or the Canton Tower and riverfront walk | Only with a layover, and only if you stay in one area |
| One day | One side of the river: the Liwan and Yuexiu old city, or Canton Tower and Zhujiang New Town | Doable, but you will skip the other half |
| Two days | One day for the old city, one for the skyline and the river | The minimum that feels like a visit |
| Three days | Two days as above plus a full day out: Baiyun Mountain and the botanical garden, Chimelong, or the city's revolutionary-history route | The version most first-timers should book |
| Four to five days | Three days as above, plus a day trip and an unhurried food day | Right if food is the reason you came |
The honest answer to "how many days in Guangzhou" is that the city is not short of things to do — it is short of reasons to rush. Two days is the point at which you stop moving between districts and start noticing one.
Baiyun International Airport is the arrival point for almost everyone, and it is the single most common place where a Guangzhou trip goes wrong, because the airport now has more than one terminal in passenger use and they are not served by the same rail lines. If you have not flown into it recently, read the terminal printed on your ticket rather than the terminal in an older guide.
We keep the terminal-by-terminal detail, the fares and the intercity link on a separate page so this guide does not go stale every timetable change: see Guangzhou Baiyun Airport to the city for how to reach each terminal, which metro line and shuttle combination applies, and where taxis and ride-hailing pick up.
If you are arriving from another Chinese city rather than from abroad, the rail option is usually faster than flying: see how to book China high-speed rail tickets before you buy, because the booking rules for foreign passports are the part people get wrong.
The metro is the default. Guangzhou's metro takes international bank cards, which removes the single biggest friction point for a first visit: UnionPay, Mastercard, American Express, Visa and JCB cards are accepted for travel across the network, and POS terminals that support international cards are available at eleven metro stations, including Pazhou and Xingangdong. If you would rather hold cash, currency exchange is available at Xingangdong Station, Guangzhou East Railway Station and Airport North Station. The city also notes that at peak hours staff at Xingangdong and Pazhou stations help travellers exchange small amounts of renminbi and buy tickets.
For anyone arriving for the Canton Fair, Line 8 reaches Pazhou and Xingangdong stations and Line 11 reaches Pazhou. Since Chigang Station opened on Line 12, the eastern section from Higher Education Mega Center South to Ersha Island has a direct interchange with Line 8, which shortens several trips that used to require going back through the centre.
Worth knowing before you need them: key stations have a service desk covering consulting, translation, ticketing, emergency aid and a rest area; there are two smart lockers at Pazhou Station on Line 8; bilingual Chinese-and-English customer service robots are deployed at Pazhou and Xingangdong; 78 simultaneous interpretation devices are installed at key stations; and printed service handbooks are available at Pazhou, Xingangdong, the airport stations and Guangzhou South Railway Station.
Payment on arrival, if this is your first China trip. The metro is only half the problem — every shop, taxi and ticket machine assumes a phone. Set up a payment app before you fly, not in the arrivals hall: see how to pay in China as a foreigner.
The sightseeing bus, if you want the overview first. Guangzhou runs four sightseeing bus routes, and they are genuinely useful for a short trip because three of them cover areas you would otherwise criss-cross by metro. The city's own description: three daytime lines are themed on Xiguan characteristics, the thousand-year-old ancient town, and the city's new central axis, plus one night-time line along the new central axis. The daytime routes operate between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., and the night-time route between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
The standard one-day ticket was priced at 40 yuan per person when the city published the route details, and a one-day ticket allows unlimited transfers between routes within a 24-hour period after activation. The buses were first launched in 2016 and carry an automatic audio guide in eight languages. Prices and timetables on a seasonal service like this one do move, so confirm the current figure at the operator before you plan your day around it.
Taxis and ride-hailing work the way they do in any large Chinese city, with one local caveat: pick-up points at major attractions and at the airport are adjusted from time to time, so follow the on-site signs rather than a gate number quoted in an older guide.
This is the plan that fits the geography. It keeps each day on one side of the river and uses the metro or the sightseeing bus rather than the road network.
Day 1 — the Lingnan old city (Liwan and Yuexiu). Start at Yongqing Fang on Enning Road, walk the arcaded lanes, then take the short ride to the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall for the carving and folk art. Eat lunch in the Shangxiajiu pedestrian street area, which runs into Yongqing Fang and is where the traditional Liwan eateries and old brands are. Spend the afternoon on Shamian Island — architecture, sculptures and the ancient trees are the three things the city itself lists as its draws — then finish on Beijing Road Pedestrian Street in Yuexiu, where the old road surface is preserved under your feet and the street food is the point. If you would rather not navigate this, it is almost exactly the Xiguan route of the sightseeing bus.
Day 2 — Canton Tower, the river and the new axis. Go up the Canton Tower in Haizhu District, then cross to Haixinsha Island and Zhujiang New Town for the modern city on foot, with Ersha Island as the quiet end of the afternoon. Book the Pearl River night cruise for the evening, boarding at Canton Tower Fortune Pier or Haixinsha East Wharf. Finish at the Zhujiang Party Pier beer culture and art zone if you still have energy. The night-time sightseeing route covers this same stretch if you prefer to sit.
Day 3 — pick one and do it properly. The three good options are: green — Baiyun Mountain for the trails and skyline views, then the South China National Botanical Garden; family — Chimelong for coasters, water parks and the circus, or Sunac's indoor ski area in Huadu if the weather is against you; history — the thousand-year-old city sightseeing route, which strings together the Third National Congress site, the martyrs' cemetery, the Peasant Movement Institute and Huanghuagang. Adding Lotus Hill or Baomo Garden in Panyu, or the hot springs in Conghua, turns day three into a day out of the city rather than a day in it.
The choice is really a choice between three parts of the city, and it is worth making deliberately rather than by hotel price:
| Base | Best for | The trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Tianhe | Metro coverage and modern Guangzhou; Grandview Mall at No. 228 Tianhe Road is the anchor, and the run to the airport and the rail stations is the shortest | Fewer of the old-city sights are within walking distance |
| Yuexiu | Walking to sights rather than riding to them — Beijing Road and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall at No. 299 Dongfeng Middle Road | Quieter at night than Tianhe, and the river is a ride away |
| Liwan | Cantonese food and the arcaded old streets, from Shangxiajiu and Yongqing Fang out to Shamian Island | You cross the river for the skyline, and for the airport line |
We keep the neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood comparison, including the Canton Fair angle and which areas suit a short trip, on a dedicated page: see the best area to stay in Guangzhou.
Liwan District has published six food hubs, which is as useful a restaurant shortlist as you will get from an official source:
Two practical notes. First, dim sum is a morning and lunch meal, not an evening one; if you turn up at 8 p.m. for yum cha you will find the trolleys gone. Second, this is Cantonese food rather than the Chinese food you may know from home: if you want the shortest route to understanding the city, eat in Liwan on day one.
Guangzhou runs a free transit tour for international transfer passengers, and it is the highest-value thing on this page if you are connecting through Baiyun Airport anyway. International transit travellers with foreign passports whose stopover in Guangzhou is more than eight hours can join a free half-day guided tour: it departs from Terminal 2 of Baiyun International Airport at 8:30 a.m., visits six sights — Huacheng Square, Guangdong Museum, Guangzhou Library, Guangzhou Opera House, the Chen Clan Academy and Yuexiu Park — stops for a Cantonese dim sum lunch, and returns to the airport at 2 p.m. You register at the information desk in the International Arrival Hall of Terminal 2, and you need your passport and your connecting boarding pass. The programme's details are as published by the city; entry eligibility follows China's transit visa-free rules, which change, so check the current position with China's National Immigration Administration and see our China visa-free entry guide before you build a plan around a layover.

Two days cover the old city and the river skyline, and three days let you add a full day outside the centre. One day is workable on a layover if you pick one side of the city rather than trying to cross it twice.
Tianhe is the most convenient base for the metro and modern Guangzhou, Yuexiu suits sightseeing on foot around Beijing Road, and Liwan suits anyone whose priority is food and the older streets. Compare them in detail on our Guangzhou accommodation guide.
Yes. UnionPay, Mastercard, American Express, Visa and JCB cards are accepted across the network, and POS terminals that take international cards are available at eleven metro stations, including Pazhou and Xingangdong. Carry your passport, since a counter purchase may still require an identity document.
If your stopover is more than eight hours and you are an international transit traveller with a foreign passport, you can join the free half-day city tour that leaves Terminal 2 in the morning and returns to the airport at 2 p.m. Register at the information desk in the International Arrival Hall of Terminal 2, with your passport and connecting boarding pass.
Cantonese food and Lingnan culture: the arcaded old streets and ancestral halls of Liwan and Yuexiu, the Shamian Island waterfront, and the Canton Tower skyline across the Pearl River. It is also the city most travellers see only from an airport window, which is the one thing worth changing.
