Hangzhou airport to the city: metro, taxi and coach

Last updated: 21 October 2026

Direct answer. Three metro lines — 1, 7 and 19 — serve Hangzhou Xiaoshan airport, with trains from 05:50 until the last departure just after midnight. Taxis load outside Gate 14 in Terminal 3 and in the Terminal 4 traffic-centre corridor, flagfall CNY 11. Coaches from the GTC level 1 reach 30-plus Zhejiang destinations.

Hangzhou is one of the easier Chinese gateways to arrive in without a plan, because the airport sits on top of a metro interchange rather than at the end of a bus-only spur. The trade-off is that the three lines go in three different directions, and which one you want depends on where you are sleeping — not on which one leaves first.

This page covers the three ways out of Xiaoshan: the metro, the taxi ranks, and the coach station. Every time, fare and rule below is taken from the airport's own English pages, retrieved on the date in the source table. Nothing here is estimated.

Metro: three lines, one station

Hangzhou Metro lines 1, 7 and 19 all call at the airport. The station opens at 05:50 and closes at 00:27. The airport's own rule is the one worth memorising: you may not pass through the entry gate less than five minutes before the last train on your line departs.

LineDirectionFirst trainLast train
Line 1To Xianghu06:0022:30
Line 1To Linping06:0022:30
Line 7To Jiangdong'er Road06:0623:14
Line 7To Wushan Square06:1622:49
Line 19To Tiaoxi06:0323:14
Line 19To Yongsheng Road06:2000:09

Two practical readings of that table. First, the late arrivals are uneven: Line 19 towards Yongsheng Road is the only service still running after midnight, while Line 7 towards Wushan Square — the direction most visitors want — stops at 22:49. If your flight lands at 22:30 and you are heading into the historic centre, you are already inside a thin margin by the time you clear immigration and baggage.

Second, "last train" is not the same as "last train you can board". Add the five-minute gate cut-off, plus the walk from arrivals to the platform, to every number above.

Line 7 terminates at Wushan Square, which sits on the West Lake side of the city — that is our reading of the map, not a claim the airport makes. If your hotel is in the lake area or the old town, Line 7 is normally the direction to look at first; if it is near Hangzhou East Railway Station, you are usually better off with the coach below than with a metro ride that needs a change.

The airport page marks its timetable as "for reference only" and points to the metro operator's own site and hotline for confirmation. Treat a late-night arrival as a case for checking that hotline rather than trusting a page cached months ago.

Taxi: two ranks, and a fare table worth reading before you queue

There are two pick-up areas. T3: outside Gate 14 on the arrivals level of Terminal 3. T4: on the connecting corridor between Terminal 4 and the traffic centre, on F1. The general taxi waiting area is outside Gate 10 of the arrivals hall.

Above 10 kmCNY 3.75 per kmCNY 3.75 per km
Waiting timeCNY 2.5 per 4 minutesCNY 2.5 per 4 minutes

The step at 10 km is the part that surprises people: beyond that distance the rate rises by half again, and the 50% return surcharge is already inside the CNY 3.75 figure rather than added on top. A long ride into the city therefore costs more per kilometre than the first ten, not less. Pay by the meter; the airport page states plainly that there is no bargaining, and that you may refuse to pay if the driver smokes or refuses to run the meter.

Two mechanisms exist that a foreign visitor will not recognise as normal. Short trips — the airport defines them as within 15 km — are handled by a supplementary-passenger arrangement, and staff may ask you to accept a second passenger so the driver is not penalised for a short fare. If your destination is genuinely close, cooperate with the staff rather than the driver. And if a long-distance trip falls outside the legal taxi operating area and the fare cannot be agreed, the airport's instruction is to tell staff, who will re-arrange a car. Neither situation is a scam; both are how the rank is administered.

If something goes wrong, the traffic enforcement complaint line is 0571-85463212 — a different number from the airport's general service line.

Coaches: the option most visitors ignore

The coach station is on the northwest side of level 1 of the Ground Transport Centre, and it runs more than 30 lines covering almost all major cities and counties in Zhejiang. Tickets are real-name: you buy with a passport, and that is explicitly listed as a valid document, alongside resident and temporary ID cards. Children under 14 can travel on a household registration permit.

This matters for two groups the metro does not serve well. Anyone heading onward to a smaller Zhejiang city — Yiwu, Shaoxing, Jinhua, Huzhou and their neighbours — can often skip a city-centre transfer entirely. And anyone whose hotel is near Hangzhou East Railway Station can take the dedicated line instead of dragging luggage through a metro change.

LineDepartures from the airportFareJourney time
Hangzhou East Railway Station23:50, 00:30, 01:10, 01:50CNY 28About 60 minutes

Read that timetable carefully before relying on it. The published departures for the Hangzhou East line are all after 23:50, which makes it a late-night service rather than an all-day one; the airport states that the return direction runs to a locally announced schedule and gives an enquiry number rather than a timetable. Journey times are quoted "under normal road and weather conditions".

Buying is not counter-only. The airport lists on-site counters and self-service kiosks, plus online purchase through Alipay and a list of Chinese travel platforms. Two exceptions send you to a counter: child or half-price tickets, and purchases made with a passport or a Hong Kong and Macau permit. In other words, the passport holder should expect to queue rather than tap.

The coach enquiry and complaint line is 0571-86662519.

Which one to take

There is no single right answer, but the decision tree is short. Landing before mid-afternoon with a hotel near West Lake: Line 7, no contest. Landing after 22:30: check whether Line 19 towards Yongsheng Road helps you, and otherwise take the taxi rank — the metro is closing around you. Heading to Hangzhou East for a train, or onward to another Zhejiang city: the coach station, but verify the departure list first, because several lines are not all-day. Two or more travellers with heavy bags and a hotel in the old town: the taxi fare structure above will usually be the least annoying option, even at the higher per-kilometre rate beyond 10 km.

Whichever you choose, the airport has one structural advantage over Beijing and Shanghai: everything leaves from the same Ground Transport Centre, so you are not committing to a terminal transfer before you have decided.

Two things to sort out before you land

Payment and connectivity decide whether the first hour goes smoothly. Alipay linked to a foreign card is the default answer for the metro, the coach counter and most taxi drivers, and our guide to paying in China as a foreigner covers the setup that has to happen before you arrive, not at the ticket gate. For data, a travel eSIM that routes outside the mainland filtering system is the difference between a working map and a blank one — see which eSIM actually works in China.

If you are still deciding where to base yourself, the Hangzhou city guide and our where to stay in Hangzhou breakdown cover the districts this page's transport options connect to. And if Hangzhou is one stop on a longer rail trip, China train seat classes explains what you are buying when you book onward.

Frequently asked questions

Does Hangzhou Xiaoshan airport have its own metro station?

Yes. Lines 1, 7 and 19 all serve the airport, with the station open from 05:50 to 00:27. The three lines run in different directions, so the line you need depends on your destination rather than on departure frequency.

What is the last metro from Hangzhou airport?

It depends on the line and direction. The latest published departure is Line 19 towards Yongsheng Road at 00:09; Line 7 towards Wushan Square stops at 22:49 and Line 1 at 22:30. You must be through the entry gate at least five minutes before departure.

How much does a taxi from Hangzhou airport cost?

The meter starts at CNY 11 for the first 3 km, then CNY 2.5 per km to 10 km, then CNY 3.75 per km beyond that, with the 50% return surcharge already included in the higher rate. Waiting time is charged at CNY 2.5 per 4 minutes.

Can I buy an airport coach ticket with a foreign passport?

Yes. Tickets are real-name and a passport is listed as a valid document. Passport purchases and child or half-price tickets have to be made at a counter rather than a kiosk or an online channel.

Where do I pick up a taxi at Terminal 4?

In the connecting corridor between Terminal 4 and the traffic centre, on level F1. Terminal 3 passengers use the rank outside Gate 14 on the arrivals level.
