Where to Stay in Hangzhou: Which District Fits Your Trip

Last updated: 28 September 2026

Direct answer. Base in Xihu District, which the tourism bureau lists as home to West Lake and Xixi National Wetland Park; in Shangcheng for the Southern Song old city; in Gongshu for the Grand Canal; in Yuhang for Liangzhu; and in Xiaoshan for airport nights. Western counties suit lake and mountain stays.

Which part of Hangzhou to base yourself in, matched to the sights you came for, how you arrive and how far out you want to be.

Everything below about what each district holds comes from the Hangzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, TV and Tourism's own English pages and from the city's official English site. Arrival details come from Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport's own site. All were retrieved on 28 September 2026 and are listed at the end.

The short version

Hangzhou is not one place to stay in. The city's own tourism authority says so plainly: "Hangzhou comprises 13 districts and counties, each with its own unique character and attractions" — that line sits above its interactive Tourism Map, which is the source for most of this page.

That makes the useful question a district question rather than a hotel question. Two facts shape it:

So the first decision is which of those you came for, and the second is how far out you are willing to sleep. The inner districts put you inside the historic core; the outer districts and the three western counties put you in lakes, mountains and villages, at the cost of a longer run into the centre.

How to read this page

Two things about method, stated up front:

The three World Heritage entries, in the bureau's words

These are the anchors the tourism authority itself leads with, and each sits in a different part of the city.

EntryThe bureau's own descriptionWhat it means for a base
West Lake"A masterpiece of landscape design that has inspired poets and artists for centuries. Explore the Ten Scenes of West Lake, historic temples, and tranquil gardens."Puts you in the historic core; the bureau places West Lake in Xihu District
Liangzhu Archaeological Ruins"Evidence of early urban civilisation dating back 5,000 years. Discover the ancient jade culture, hydraulic systems, and palace foundations of China's earliest city."A north-western base; the bureau ties Liangzhu culture to Yuhang District
The Grand Canal (Hangzhou Section)"The world's longest man-made waterway, connecting Beijing and Hangzhou for over 1,700 years. Experience the living heritage along the historic canal banks."A northern and north-eastern base; the bureau ties the canal to Gongshu District

The bureau also lists West Lake, the Grand Canal and Xixi National Wetland Park among its "must-visit attractions", and names them in its wider "Explore Hangzhou" index alongside attractions and museums, routes and itineraries, hotels and guesthouses, dining, shopping, events and rural tourism.

The 13 districts and counties, in the tourism bureau's words

This is the table most "where to stay" articles fill in with opinion. Below is what the bureau's own Tourism Map says about each area, with our reading of it in the third column.

AreaThe bureau's descriptionOur reading: the trip it points to

Linping DistrictA long historical standing and a galaxy of talents. The name of Linping was recorded in the annals of history in the Eastern Han Dynasty and it developed into a market in the Jin Dynasty. Since the Sui and Tang dynasties it has been a must-pass for ships going east along the Shangtang River out of Hangzhou, and the largest port.Canal-and-river history, a quieter eastern base
Fuyang DistrictLocated in the south-western part of Hangzhou. Within the district are Hangzhou Safari Park, Longmen Ancient Town, Fuchun Taoyuan, Xinsha Island and other national 4A tourist attractions, as well as Huang Gongwang's Hermitage, Stork Mountain, Tianzhong Mountain, the China Ancient Papermaking and Printing Culture Village, the Fuchun Shanju International Golf Course and the Yong'an Mountain National Paragliding Training Base.Families, ancient towns, a rural base close to the city

Jiande CityA time-honoured history and the birthplace of human history in Zhejiang. According to identification of the "Tooth of Jiande People" fossil found in Wugui Cave, Xinqiao Village, Lijia Town, humans lived and multiplied here as early as 100,000 years ago.Archaeology-minded travellers, rural stays
Chun'an CountyLocated in the western part of Zhejiang, on the upper reaches of the Qiantang River. It is home to the Qiandao Lake Scenic Area, a national 5A tourist attraction, and is an old revolutionary base county. Chun'an has been the county seat of Xin'an in ancient times, the "No. 1 County of old Yanzhou", and tourism has developed rapidly to become a pillar and leading industry.Lake stays, island scenery, the far-west option

A note the table itself forces: the bureau profiles thirteen areas, and only a few of them are the "Hangzhou" most first-time visitors picture. West Lake, Xixi, the Grand Canal and the Southern Song core are inner-city; Qiandao Lake, Tianmu Mountain and the Zhexi Grand Canyon are in the outer districts and the western counties. If your trip is two nights, choose one end. If it is a week, the profiles above are the case for splitting the stay.

Arriving: what the airport's own pages state

Almost every international arrival reaches Hangzhou through Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, so the airport's own transport pages are the practical starting point. They state the following.

ModeWhat the airport's own site states
MetroThree metro lines currently serve the airport: Line 1, Line 7 and Line 19. The station opens at 05:50 and closes at 00:27. Line 1 runs towards Xianghu (first train 06:00, last 22:30). Line 7 runs towards Jiangdong Erlu (06:06 / 23:14) and towards Wushan Square (06:16 / 22:49). Line 19 runs towards the West Railway Station (06:03 / 23:14) and towards Yongsheng Road (06:20 / 00:09). The airport warns that arriving at the station less than five minutes before a last train's scheduled departure may mean you cannot enter the gates
TaxiTwo dedicated taxi pick-up areas: T3, on the arrivals level outside Gate 14, and T4, on the F1 level corridor with the transport centre. The page states the airport runs a short-trip compensation mechanism for drivers on journeys under 15 km, and that passengers should refuse to misstate their destination. Airport service line: 0571-96299
CoachesCoach services leave from the coach station inside the transport centre. Tickets can be bought online up to seven days ahead or at the station's counters and machines; photo ID is required. The airport lists scheduled and custom services to destinations including Anji, Haining and Jinhua
Shuttles and busesThree on-airport shuttle loops link Terminal 3, Terminal 4, the coach station and the car parks, running at intervals from 10 to 30 minutes depending on the time band; public bus 2016 also serves the T4 terminal

Two cautions follow from the source itself. First, these are the airport's own statements and metro hours and last-train times are revised without much notice — the metro operator's own pages are the current version, and the airport page links to them. Second, the airport page also publishes a set of coach fares; this page deliberately reproduces none of them, because fares are set by the operator and change, and the airport's own page is the place to read them.

Which base that favours — our reading

This table is ours, built only on the descriptions above. It is a filter, not a source's recommendation.

You wantThe base the sources point to
West Lake on foot, first-visit sightseeingXihu District — the district profile puts West Lake and Xixi National Wetland Park inside it
Southern Song history, the old city, walking blocksShangcheng District — described as where the Southern Song Imperial City once was

Liangzhu, tea country, a quieter northern baseYuhang District
An early flight, or a transit nightXiaoshan District — described as the southern gate of the city

Ancient towns, theme parks, a rural base near the cityFuyang District
Mountains, lakes, canyons, longer staysLin'an District, or the western counties of Tonglu, Jiande and Chun'an

What the bureau's own index covers, beyond where to sleep

The tourism authority organises its English site around a fixed set of themes, and reading them is a quick way to check that a base matches your reason for coming. Its "Explore Hangzhou" index lists: attractions and museums; routes and itineraries, described as curated travel routes from half-day walks to week-long explorations; hotels and guesthouses, described as running from luxury star-rated hotels to charming boutique guesthouses; dining and cuisine; shopping, including silk, tea, porcelain and local specialities in historic markets; events and activities; rural tourism; nightlife and entertainment; and travel tips for transport, medical care and mobile services.

The same site's "Key Focus" entries name departure tax refund for overseas visitors, smart tourism and mobile service guides, the Wuyue 30 Sceneries, Song Dynasty charm, the Three Rivers and Two Banks corridors and night Hangzhou. None of those is a hotel recommendation; all of them are stated by the bureau as its own framing of the city, and they are worth a look before you fix a base, because several of them sit outside the inner districts.

Getting between the bases

The city is large and the bases above are not interchangeable on foot. The district the bureau describes as the southern gate — Xiaoshan — holds the airport; the lake, the canal and the Southern Song core sit in the inner districts; Liangzhu and the tea country sit north-west; and Qiandao Lake sits in the far west of the municipality.

For a trip that strings Hangzhou together with other cities, the rail side matters more than the district side: our guide to booking high-speed rail tickets in China covers how the ticketing actually works for foreign passports, and the seat classes page explains what the names on a Chinese ticket mean.

Where to go next on this site

If Hangzhou is one stop on a longer trip, the other area guides on this site follow the same source-first method: Shanghai for the airport-and-two-airports problem, Beijing for a city laid out on a grid, and the site's city guide to Shanghai for how the Yangtze delta cities fit together. Before you land, how to pay in China covers the payment apps that most metro gates and shops expect, and visa-free entry covers the current entry schemes for short stays.

Frequently asked questions

Which area of Hangzhou is best for a first visit?

The tourism bureau's own Tourism Map puts West Lake and Xixi National Wetland Park inside Xihu District and describes the district as having more than 40 scenic spots, including three national key cultural relics protection units. For a first trip built around the lake and the classic sights, Xihu District is the area the city's own material points to; Shangcheng District, described by the same source as where the Southern Song Imperial City once was, is the alternative for a history-led first trip.

How many districts does Hangzhou have?

The tourism bureau states that Hangzhou comprises 13 districts and counties and profiles each one on its Tourism Map: Shangcheng, Gongshu, Xihu, Binjiang, Qiantang, Xiaoshan, Yuhang, Linping, Fuyang and Lin'an districts, plus Tonglu County, Jiande City and Chun'an County. The profiles are short, and the bureau states that each area has its own character and attractions.

Should I stay in the city or out at Qiandao Lake?

They are different trips. The bureau places the Qiandao Lake Scenic Area, a national 5A tourist attraction, in Chun'an County, which it describes as lying in the western part of Zhejiang on the upper reaches of the Qiantang River, with tourism as a pillar industry. Qiandao Lake is therefore a destination stay rather than a city base; if your sightseeing is West Lake, the canal and Liangzhu, a Chun'an base means a long run in.

How do I get from Hangzhou airport to the city by metro?

The airport's own metro page states that Lines 1, 7 and 19 serve the airport, that the station opens at 05:50 and closes at 00:27, and it publishes first and last train times for each direction. Metro hours and last-train times change without much notice, so check the operator's current pages before a late arrival.

Does this page recommend specific hotels?

No. This page describes areas and the trade-offs the tourism bureau itself describes, and it recommends no property. The bureau's site does carry a hotels and guesthouses category and its own hotel news feed, and the city's official English site publishes hotel items as well; those are the places to look for named properties.
