Direct answer. Refund on 12306 before departure, or at a station counter before the train leaves. Cash-paid or reimbursement-receipt tickets must then be collected at a counter within 180 days with the original ID. Fees follow a separate scale — see the seat-class guide.
How a China train ticket refund actually works: which channel to use, who may collect the money, the 180-day window, and the free-refund window for a mistake.
A refund is not one action in China Railway's rules; it is a decision about which channel you use, and the channel decides where the money comes back and who has to be standing at the counter. 12306's English FAQ answers this in a run of numbered items, and the run is worth reading in order, because the exceptions are where most claims fail. This page covers the procedure only: the fee percentages are set out in China train seat classes and are not repeated here. For what the ticket itself is, see China train e-tickets.
The FAQ describes two routes to a refund, and it describes them with different deadlines.
| Channel | When it is available | Where the money goes |
|---|---|---|
| 12306 website / app, before departure | Any ticket bought on 12306; and, for users who have registered and completed facial identity verification in the mobile app, also their own tickets bought at a station window, a ticketing machine, a ticket agency, or by another person on 12306 | Back to the original online payment method |
| Station ticket counter | Before the train departs, on the ticket's stated departure time | At the counter, in the form the ticket was paid in |
The second row is the one people misread. The window does not refund "until departure" as a courtesy — the FAQ states the station refund must be processed before the train departure, and then adds the exception described below for the two hours after it.
If the ticket was bought online, the refund is an online action and the money returns to the payment method used for the purchase. The FAQ's wording is that it is returned "at a specified time as per relevant regulations" — it does not publish a processing time, so do not plan around a number.
Two purchase types break that clean loop, and both involve paper:
That last sentence is the single most expensive detail on this page. A printed reimbursement receipt is a physical instrument, and an online refund does not discharge it.
The station documents rule is written for two situations, and the difference between them is one extra ID.
The third item is the one that catches foreign passports: a passport is not a resident ID card, so the order number belongs in the same envelope as the passport.
The same trustee arrangement applies after an online claim. If you have already applied for the refund on 12306, another person can collect: their own valid ID document, the passenger's ID document used for the purchase, and the reimbursement receipt if one was printed.
The FAQ allows a station refund within 2 hours after the train departs, but only with the approval of the chief of the station where the ticket was sold, or of the departure station printed on the ticket. It is an approval, not an entitlement — the wording is "in special cases".
Against that, four outcomes are closed by the same item:
The FAQ also states that the railway transport company may adjust refund rules temporarily when necessary, and directs passengers to the local station or the station announcement. That is the reason a page like this one dates its rules.
This is a narrow, date-scoped concession, and it is easy to over-read, so the FAQ's own conditions belong in full.
| Condition | As the FAQ states it |
|---|---|
| Who | Registered 12306 users |
| Where bought | Official 12306 platforms — website, app, or Alipay mini-program |
| How paid | Electronic payment or reward points |
| Travel dates covered | Journeys starting from 2 February 2026, the first day of the Spring Festival travel rush |
| How often | One free refund on one order per day |
| Timing, both ends | Refund processed within 30 minutes of purchase and at least 4 hours before the scheduled departure |
| Trains covered | Domestic services, and cross-border trains departing from or arriving at Hong Kong West Kowloon |
| Excluded | Rebooked tickets, multi-ride and periodic tickets, pre-ordered tickets, waitlisted tickets, air-rail and waterway-rail tickets, group tickets, and the Railway e-Pass |
Two readings are worth stating plainly. The 30-minute clock is not a grace period on the fee scale — it is a separate concession with its own travel-date start. And the exclusion list is wide: the categories most likely to be bought in a hurry, group tickets and waitlisted tickets, are the ones that do not qualify.
If a refund service fee was charged, the station ticket counter provides a reimbursement receipt for it. For a fee charged on an endorsement or a change of arrival station made through 12306, the receipt has its own deadline: collect it at a station ticket counter within ten days of the change, with the passenger's valid ID document used to purchase the ticket.
Keep both kinds. The fee receipt is the only document that shows what the railway charged you, and the FAQ does not describe any way to obtain it later.
For a lost identity document rather than a cancelled trip, the route is different and is set out in lost passport on a China train. If children are on the booking, their tickets follow the accompanying adult's class and date, which is covered in child tickets; and the change rules that sit alongside refunds are in how to book high-speed rail in China.
Only in a special case, and only with approval: the FAQ allows a station refund within two hours after departure with the consent of the chief of the station where the ticket was sold, or of the departure station on the ticket. Once the trip has started, the ticket cannot be refunded, with illness or injury as the stated exception.
Apply for the refund on 12306, then collect the cash at any station ticket counter within 180 days of the application, including the day of application, with the original ID document used to buy the ticket.
Yes. After an online claim, the trustee needs their own valid ID document, your ID document used for the purchase, and the reimbursement receipt if one was printed. At a counter refund made in person, the same trustee arrangement applies with the ticket added.
A registered 12306 user buying on an official 12306 platform with electronic payment or reward points gets one free refund on one order per day, for journeys starting from 2 February 2026, if the refund is processed within 30 minutes of purchase and at least 4 hours before departure. Rebooked, multi-ride, pre-ordered, waitlisted, air-rail, waterway-rail, group tickets and the Railway e-Pass are excluded.
No. The FAQ states that platform tickets are non-refundable.
